M.S. Degree in Epidemiology
Unit Requirements
M.S. students are required to take a minimum of 38 units of graduate and upper division courses (100 and 200 series only), of which at least 28 units must be graduate courses in the major field, under the thesis plan (Plan I) or a minimum 41 units of graduate and upper division courses, of which at least 28 units must be graduate courses in the major field, under the comprehensive exam plan (Plan II). Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 in order to maintain graduate standing in this program.
Course & Electives Requirements
M.S. students must complete the courses outlined in the Epidemiology Required Courses. Additionally, students must select an Area of Emphasis and complete a number of approved elective courses. Electives should be selected based on the student's chosen Area of Interest Approved Electives (9 units) plus, for Plan II students, 3 additional units from among graduate courses in epidemiology and statistics. A minimum of 1 unit of the epidemiology seminar is required.
Thesis (Plan I)
For students in this plan, a research topic should be discussed and agreed upon with the student's Major Profession prior to commencing research, usually by the third quarter of the student's enrollment. MS students in this plan are required to defend their research before their Thesis Committee in a seminar that is open to the public. Comprehensive Exam (Plan II)
The comprehensive exam is both written and oral and is administered by a Comprehensive Exam Committee. The exam is designed to assess the student's mastery and working knowledge of subjects presented in the required courses. Fulfillment of the Comprehensive Exam is the last requirement of Plan II and is taken after the student has advanced to candidacy and completed all coursework for the degree.
