M.S. Degree in Epidemiology

Unit Requirements

All M.S. students are required to take a minimum of 30 units of required and recommended courses under the thesis plan (I), or a minimum 36 units of required and recommended courses under the examination plan (II). Plan I will carry a minimum of (but typically considerably more than) 6 research units for credit in addition to the required and recommended courses. At least a B (3.0 grade-point) average must be achieved in all graduate and upper division course work completed in order to maintain graduate standing in this program.

Electives & Course Requirements

Masters Students must complete the courses outlined in the Epidemiology Required Courses. Additionally, students must select an Area of Emphasis and complete a number of approved elective courses. A minimum of 9 units must be selected from the student's Area of Interest Approved Electives. Students who elect to follow the M.S. program with Plan I can apply a maximum of 6 research units (EPI 299) to their degree requirements. Students who elect the M.S. degree with Plan II must take a minimum of 12 units of electives.

Research Proposal

M.S. students in the thesis plan are required to submit a thesis research proposal to a Guidance Committee for approval prior to commencing research.

Thesis Committee or Oral Exam

Master's students in the thesis plan are required to defend their research before a Thesis Committee in a seminar that is open to the public. Master's students in the examination plan are required to complete a comprehensive oral examination.
